01 — The Challenge
Avatar Systems needed to refresh aging compute hosts and supporting infrastructure to improve performance, reliability, and compatibility with modern virtualization platforms.
The existing VMware and NSX-V environment required a complete network and firewall reconfiguration before upgrades could move forward. Critical infrastructure—including firewalls and network switches—also needed to be replaced.
With business-critical workloads depending on the environment, minimizing downtime throughout the migration was a top priority.
02 — The Viyu Solution
Viyu developed and executed a comprehensive infrastructure modernization plan designed to upgrade the environment while minimizing disruption.
Compute Infrastructure Refresh
Viyu procured and deployed three HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 servers, updated firmware, and installed VMware ESXi 8.0.3.
Network & Security Modernization
New FortiGate firewalls and FortiSwitch core and access switches were installed and configured, including FortiLink and VLAN setup.
Infrastructure Migration
Viyu migrated existing firewall rules from NSX-V to FortiGate and rebuilt switch configurations for the new environment.
Network Documentation
New Layer 2 and high-level network designs were documented to simplify future management and support scalability.
03 — The Results
Zero Unplanned Downtime
The migration was completed without customer-impacting outages.
Successful Workload Migration
All virtual machines were migrated to the new compute cluster using coordinated vMotion, with workloads validated before and after migration.
Clean Network Cutover
New FortiGate firewalls and FortiSwitch infrastructure were deployed and cut over during a planned after-hours window.
